Ranking of Popular Travel Sites Finds Vast Majority Have Insecure Password Practices

Password manager and digital wallet Dashlane recently released their rankings of the password security of 55 popular travel websites, which found that 89 percent of sites leave users exposed through insecure password practices. Only 11 percent of the sites received a passing score and only one site of the 55 - Airbnb - received a perfect 5/5 score. And only one - Norwegian Cruise Lines - scored a 0/5.

"I believe that traveling is the single greatest opportunity to de-stress from daily life and broaden our horizons," Emmanuel Schalit, CEO of Dashlane, said in a statement released by the company. "However, the modern traveler has to reckon with the many digital hazards associated with a journey - from booking flights, to reserving hotel rooms, to renting a car or looking online for recommendations - which creates many chances for personal data to become compromised. Our intention in ranking travel sites is not to scare people away from one of life's greatest pleasures, but to make the modern traveler more aware. The days of worrying about just pickpockets are over, digital thieves are the real threat."

Digital thieves are absolutely a real threat. And from insecure public and airport wifi to sites asking for logins via other accounts to, it's now evident, insecure password practices, it's clear that they're a very real threat to travelers.

The first defense any internet user has against hackers is a strong password. But human beings are fallible and often default to weak or repeat passwords. Websites can mitigate against human fallibility by creating password requirements and users can utilize password managers (like Dashlane) to create and store strong, unique passwords. It's virtually impossible remember all of the passwords for all of the accounts people have today, so rather than risk an insecure password, it's worth investing in a good password manager.

For these rankings, Dashlane looked at five factors: passwords with eight or more characters; passwords containing both letters and numbers; a password strength assessor on the site; an account creation email; and two-factor authentication. Each site received one point for each factor and a score of 4/5 or higher was concerned to have met the threshold for strong user password security.
