Tenta DNS Improves Performance, Adds DNS over HTTPS

👂 This post is available as a voice article on the Tenta podcast. Tune in for our round up of Tenta updates, technology, and privacy issues around the world.

Tenta is thrilled to announce that we’ve supercharged Tenta DNS, adding compatibility for the hundreds of slow, non-standard and otherwise broken versions of DNS that exist on the real internet. As a result, Tenta DNS now works with DNS over TLS and DNSSEC as they are implemented today, offering a full fledged resolver with the performance for networks small and large.

In addition to our existing implementation of DNS over TLS, we’ve also added support for DNS over HTTPS (DoH). As with our work to add DNS over TLS, we’ve chosen to implement DNS over HTTPS, even in its early state, in order to help drive the future of private and secure browsing. In particular, DoH adds another alternative to DNS over TLS, allowing even lightweight applications to securely access DNS and the internet, without the overhead of building in an entire DNS stub resolver.

Secure Upstream Connections

Although Tenta DNS (and others) have provided support for DNS over TLS and DNS over HTTPS, we’ve noticed that many authoritative DNS resolvers have yet to add such support. That means that although the connection between the end user and Tenta DNS is secure, the upstream connection between Tenta DNS and some upstream resolvers may be unsecured. In order to provide increased transparency into the process of rolling out DNS over TLS widely across the internet, we’re making available a new API endpoint on our public DNS resolvers which tracks all the upstream resolvers we’ve encountered that are capable of responding via DNS over TLS. This public API is available at https://opennic.tenta.io/tls-map.

Another win for privacy

With the addition of DNS over HTTPS support, and our existing support for DNS over TLS, Tenta DNS implements the latest standards and enhancements to the DNS protocol to ensure user privacy and security. Rounding out today's announcement, Tenta Browser now offers built-in support for Cloudflare and Quad9's DNS resolvers as well. We're proud to include these privacy-first DNS options in Tenta Browser to aid you in defense of your privacy.
