VPNs Alone Won't Protect Your Privacy

This week, Senate Joint Resolution 34 was signed into law - the last step in killing the Broadband Privacy Rules. The rules — which FCC chairman Ajit Pai has vowed to block since before he was even appointed — would have required broadband companies to get an explicit opt-in before collecting sensitive information. That information includes precise geo-location, children’s information, health information, financial information, social security numbers, web browsing history, app usage history, and the content of communication.

Online privacy is an increasing concern as we transition more of our sensitive information online. Major data breaches in companies ranging from Yahoo to banks to W-2 phishing scams have made people aware of the fact that the criminals are often way ahead of the good guys when it comes to online security.

After the election in November, there was an uptick in downloads of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). That’s because VPNs create a secure connection with a server, masking your internet activity. While there’s no data yet, we’ll probably see a similar uptick after this latest blow to online privacy.

But do VPNs really protect you from the kind of tracking that broadband providers will be allowed to do now that President Trumps has signed the resolution blocking the implementation of the Internet Broadband Privacy Rules? Some VPNs have been found out to turn around and sell their customer’s data themselves, making them an ineffective solution, to say the least. Others are blocked by certain sites, slow down connection speed, or actually open you up to attackers instead of protecting you from them.

Tenta, however, is offering a solution that takes into account all of those other VPN issues. Here’s what we’re proposing.

We’ll Never Sell Your Data

We do not sell our user information. Unlike most browsers, our business model is not based on ads, so we have no financial reason to do so. From the start, we decided our mission was to protect user data instead of selling it. So how do we make money? While we offer free unlimited VPN for browsing, a Tenta Pro subscription extends VPN protection to your entire device. We'll also offer more advanced features such as custom DNS and enterprise services.

Private Browsing

Our Smart Incognito browser allows for truly private browsing. Your history is deleted with no logs kept; our default is private and convenient browsing; we automatically connect you with a VPN; and your IP address is always hidden. We also ensure secure DNS with no DNS leaks, private bookmarks, and locked saved tabs.

Encrypted Data

But we take it even a step further by encrypting all of your browsing data. You access everything with a PIN, protecting you against local attacks or eavesdroppers. We don’t have access to your history, data, or any activity at all. Your PIN is never stored on any server or the device. Rather it is used to derive the user specific encryption key, which is also not stored on any server. We use SHA-256 as a baseline for hash security, SHA-384 where feasible, SHA-512 for data cipher authentication, AES-256 for stream encryption and stationary data on your device, and the OpenVPN protocol for your VPN connections.

This vote is just the latest evidence that the government is not concerned with online privacy. That means that as consumers, we all need to take matter into our own hands. Don’t rely on just a VPN to protect your privacy. You deserve more.
