Web Giants Join the Battle for the Net - And So Can You

Today, hundreds of online retailers, marketplaces, hubs for social justice, adult sites, streaming services, and more, are banding together in the fight for net neutrality.

The day of action is spurred by a likely regression of legislation that currently, prevents internet service providers (ISPs) from limiting web accessibility and free speech. Revoking this legislation (Title II of the Communications Act) has the potential to slow down internet speeds on select websites and block content all together by putting power into the hands of cable companies such as Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T.

Ajit Pai, current Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), has been pushing for the legislation’s revocation since beginning his five year term in January of this year. Pai, who vowed to protect the interests of cable companies even before taking office, spearheaded Senate Joint Resolution 34 which was signed into law this past April. The Resolution was one of the first steps in this direction, and effectively killed the Broadband Privacy Rules, which previously required ISPs to display an opt-in message before collecting sensitive information from web customers.

Two months ago, the FCC voted to move forward with dismantling Title II of the Communications Act, and allow major cable companies to take (or rather, drop) the reins when it comes to net neutrality.

That’s why today, online giants like Amazon and Netflix are fighting back by taking a public stance on net neutrality. They join hundreds of other sites that depend on a free and open net to function, along with people from all over the country speaking out to protect their right to browse an unrestricted web. Among the notable participants are: Imgur, Medium, Spotify, Soundcloud, Tumblr, Trello, Weebly, Urban Dictionary, Yelp, Reddit, Kickstarter, Vimeo, GitHub, Etsy, PornHub, Mozilla, and Twitter. Change.org even launched a petition on their own site to save net neutrality, which has harnessed the support of over 32,000 signers.

If you support net neutrality and want to join today’s Battle for the Net, there are a number of ways you can take action:

  1. Send a letter to the FCC and Congress now.
  2. Join the internet-wide protest to save net neutrality.
  3. Change your profile picture or update your cover photo to show your support.
  4. Share these graphics on social media to raise awareness, using the hashtags #Battleforthenet and #NetNeutrality.
  5. Sign this petition to the FCC urging them to save net neutrality.
  6. If you’re a blogger or run a site, you can display an alert to your followers, filling them in on what’s happening and encouraging them to participate in the day of action. You can grab the code from GitHub, the widget for Wordpress, or use the app through Cloudflare.

Battle for the Net is led by Fight for the Future, the Freepress Action Fund, and Demand Progress, all of which are groups fighting for civil liberties. Both Fight for the Future and the Freepress Action Fund focus especially on web based freedoms as they pertain to open access of information and communication tools, and all three of the groups operate on the web themselves, and have a personal stake in its future.
